Frank Vincent Zappa, lahir pada tanggal 21 Desember 1940 di Baltimore, Maryland, Amerika Serikat. Frank Zappa adalah komposer, gitaris, penyanyi, sutradara film dan pemimpin band.

Frank Zappa adalah salah satu musisi dan komposer paling produktif pada masanya, dengan merilis total 80 album selama karir dan mencakup hampir semua genre musik.

Frank Zappa juga menunjukkan bakat untuk menulis lagu-lagu Rock dengan lirik cabul, menyindir dan lucu. Di atas panggung Frank Zappa menuntut keahlian dan spontanitas dari musisi.

Pada tahun 1950-an, Frank Zappa awalnya dipengaruhi Pop dan Rock (seperti Doo-Wop dan Rhythm and Blues), dan komposer klasik abad ke-20, termasuk Igor Stravinsky dan Edgard Varèse. Sementara musik instrumental-nya menampilkan free jazz yang kuat, jazz fusion dan modernist classical characteristics.

Karirnya Frank Zappa dimulai pada tahun 1955 dengan rekaman pada pertengahan tahun 1960-an, termasuk kolaborasi dengan teman sekolahnya Captain Beefheart.

Frank Zappa selalu memilih musisi terbaik untuk mengiringinya, seperti Adrian Belew (King Crimson), Terry Bozzio, Aynsley Thomas Dunbar, Lowell Thomas George (Little Feat), Jean-Luc Ponty, Ruth Underwood, George Duke, Vinnie Colaiuta, Mike Keneally, dan Steve Vai.

Menjelang pertengahan tahun tujuh puluhan albumnya menjadi lebih berorientasi Rock, dan hampir semua album diproduksi sendiri.

Sejumlah musisi terkenal, band dan orkestra dari berbagai genre telah dipengaruhi oleh musik Frank Zappa. Seperti Alice Cooper, Primus, William Robert "Billy Bob" Thornton, Henry Cow, Trey Anastasio (Phish), John Anthony Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Black Sabbath, Michael Stephen Portnoy (Dream Theater), Warren Justin DeMartini (Ratt), Steve Vai, System of a Down, Clawfinger, Tomas Ulrich, Meridian Arts Ensemble, William Richard "Bill" Frisell, John Zorn, George Clinton, George Winston, Robert Gluck, Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic, Masami Akita (Merzbow), dan masih banyak lagi.

Setelah mengidap kanker prostat selama 3 tahun, Frank Zappa meninggal pada tanggal 4 Desember 1993 dan dimakamkan di Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery di Los Angeles, California.
